An exhibit celebrating works from some of the most eminent creators of Japanese fashion is currently going on at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Brisbane, Australia.

Dubbed as Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion, the event aims to chart the over 30-year-long evolution of the country’s avant-garde fashion, dating back to the early 1980s to the present.

Slated to run through February 15, 2014, the display gives an up and close insight into how Japanese fashion made an enormous impact on world fashion in the late 20th century.

Divided across four themes, the exhibition includes some 100 tremendously innovative hybrids of tradition and techno-couture designs, inspired by punk and classic Japanese aesthetics, from names like Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto.

The display also includes creations by the techno-couturier Junya Watanabe (a protégé of Kawakubo), the pioneer of ‘'Ura-Harajuku’ movement Jun Takahashi (Undercover brand) along with some radical new generation creators including Tao Kurihara, Hiroaki Ohya, Matohu, Akira Naka, Hatra and mintdesigns.

Sourced from Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibits have been curated by the eminent Japanese fashion historian and the Director of the esteemed Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan, Akiko Fukai.

The event will be accompanied by the opening of Australia’s first-ever Comme des Garçons Pocket store, exclusive to GOMA, featuring pieces from the brand’s iconic Play line as well as accessories.

Also a pop-up-shop selling a stunning range of fashion-themed publications and merchandise highlighting the innovation and creativity of Japanese fashion, design and street-styles will run along the sidelines of the ongoing display. (PB)
