HKPC develops Standard Methods for Testing Diamond

“All that glitters is not gold,” neither is diamond. When buying diamond jewellery, consumers will discover that there are no internationally accepted standards or testing certificates for diamond.

To strengthen Hong Kong's status as a world leading jewellery centre for consumers and international buyers, the Gemmological Association of Hong Kong (GAHK) with the support of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has successfully developed the “Hong Kong Standard Methods for Testing Diamond”.

By offering a comprehensive and generally applicable basis for diamond testing, this Standard, which is based on the requirements of the ISO 17025 international standard, complements the “Jewellery Integrity Campaign” initiated by Customs and Excise Department (CED) in November 2005 with support from the Consumer Council.

A press conference will be held on 4 March 2008 to introduce the Standard. Mr Louis Lo, Chairman of GAHK; Mr Lawrence Ma, President of the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China; Dr Stephen Lee, Director (Technology) of HKPC; Mr C K Cheung, Senior Accreditation Officer of the Hong Kong Accreditation Service; and representatives from CED and the Consumer Council will present details of the Standard and the associated Diamond Certification Label Scheme by GAHK.
