Ashmita recreates age old beauty of kalamkari in her designs

Her collection was called 'Gaia - An Awakening' and it was a fashionable call at Lakme Fashion Week by Ashmita Marwa to view mother earth and nature in a new light.
Reworking the beauty of the age old craft of Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh into a more contemporary form, Ashmita brought in western silhouettes like quilted jackets, saris, churi pants, trapeze dresses and long flowing kurtas in the traditional kalamkari colours of indigo, black, red, beige, olive and fuchsia for vegetable dyes and natural fabrics.
Using the Kalamkari technique with imagination and style Asmita had simple silhouettes which allowed the beauty of the craft to be the focal point.
The show opened with a long sleeved printed coat worn with pants, followed by an indigo jacket and trousers set with just a few touches of kalamkari.
Pinafores with floral, bird or mythological prints were worn over simple white shirts and jeans or teamed with rouched pants.
Striking entries were the red bubble top with printed yoke with skinny jeans and the cute olive print smock floral trapeze top with olive churidars.
The dramatic Lehenga with the floral print and the red sari with a giant bird on the pallav was a fitting finale.
Getting traditional craft to blend with contemporary shapes and getting it just perfect is a difficult task but Asmita Marwa scored with her Gaia collection which will awaken the fashion stirrings in women from around the world.
