EC appreciates assistance from businesses in anti-dumping probe

A European trade expert has appreciated the assistance from Vietnamese businesses in the EU's anti-dumping probe over leather shoes.
At a press briefing in Ha Noi on July 15 after two days working with Vietnamese businesses, Frederic Michiels, a technical expert from the Directorate General for Trade of the European Commission, said the investigation may take place directly in Viet Nam in early May, and between five and seven companies will be selected for investigation.
The expert also said the selection of Brazil as the comparable country in the investigation was made at the suggestion of the plantiff businesses.
He said, however, that the EC is considering whether this is a suitable choice, and the Vietnamese businesses have the right to propose a country they think more appropriate.
According to Michiels, the EC has yet to decide on any specific country to serve as comparison base for shoes production in Viet Nam.
On this issue, Vice President of the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaco) Nguyen Quang Thuan said based on EU criteria, Vietnamese manufacturers have not dumped shoes in the EU market.
It is unreasonable if EU compares prices of Vietnamese-made shoes with the Brazilian average price, Thuan said, adding that production costs, covering labour, material and others, in Brazil are much higher compared to those in Viet Nam.
The Lefaco leader further said it will be more reasonable to compare the prices of Vietnamese-made leather shoes to those by Indonesian, Chinese, Indian or Thai manufacturers.
