Japan’s overall clothing and accessories’ imports witnessed a marginal increase of 0.3 per cent year-on-year last year, and they stood at 3,258.418 billion yen (approx US$ 27.58 billion). Of this imports from Asian countries were valued at 3,032.646 billion yen, showing a decline of 0.2 per cent year-on-year.

Among the Asian countries, imports from China dropped by 5 per cent year-on-year to 2,302.116 billion yen, the data showed.

During the year, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 164.036 billion yen from the EU, showing an increase of 6.3 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 19.286 billion yen worth of clothing and accessories from the US, down 2 per cent.

However, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics increased by 9.7 per cent year-on-year to 932.254 billion yen in 2014. A bulk of these imports valued at 822.034 billion yen were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 526.356 billion yen, while imports from Asean nations stood at 173.259 billion yen.

Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 66.569 billion yen from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 25.477 billion yen, during the year.

In 2013, Japan’s clothing and accessories imports surged by 21.2 per cent year-on-year to 3,247.971 billion yen, while its textile yarn and fabric imports shot up by 19 per cent year-on-year to 849.825 billion yen. (RKS)
