The high court of Bangladesh in a major ruling against pollution creating tanneries directed the government to close down tanneries in the Hazaribagh area of Dhaka city by February next year in order to control the massive environmental destruction.
The court also directed the Department of Environment to ensure that pollution controlling equipments are installed in all the industries that pollute the environment by June 2010, or should be closed down for good in July.
The division bench of the high court gave this ruling on a writ petition filed by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers' Association (BELA), along with providing additional directives to control pollution and in turn save the environment.
