Concerned over 1,000 non-functional stitching units in Pakistan, the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce and Textile Industry recently directed the commerce and textile ministry to take measures to make these units functional at the earliest possible. Due to lack of a proper mechanism and planning, public money is being wasted, the committee noted.

The committee also directed the ministry to provide expenditure details of various ongoing projects for the welfare of the textile sector and take special care in planning and execution of projects, according to Pakistani media reports.

Committee Chairman Shibli Faraz free trade agreements should be signed considering Pakistan’s interests and only experts in trade and commerce should be deputed as commercial attaches in Pakistani embassies abroad. (DS)
