Fashion centre responds to customers' changing needs

Over the last few decades, Hong Kong's fashion industry has been a master of change responding to customers' changing needs by constantly moving up the value chain, said Mr Andrew Leung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's (HKTDC) Garment Advisory Committee, at the opening ceremony of Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2007 (July 11).

Also officiating at the opening of the four-day event (July 11-14) were Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology of the HKSAR Government Miss Yvonne Choi Ying-Pik , and TDC's Acting Executive Director Steve Alexander.

"Hong Kong has transformed itself into a value-added fashion centre, specialising in areas as diverse as fabric procurement, quality control, logistic arrangements and clothing designs." Mr Leung said.

"That is one of the reasons why despite the changing quota situations, Hong Kong's clothing and accessories exports continue to show great promise." Mr Leung remarked.

Guests are appreciating the fine workmanship of a fur garment produced by a Hong Kong company.

Last year, Hong Kong's exports of clothing and clothing accessories rose by 9 percent to HK$ 212.2 billion posting double digit growth in the US, the UK and Germany markets. Hong Kong's fashion export figures continue to grow steadily with exports for the first five months of this year reaching HK$75.9 billion.

Since its debut, Hong Kong Fashion Week has become an international modish event where industry players converge to promote fashion-related products and services, and tune in to global trends.
