In the wake of rising prices of cotton resulting in higher input costs for the spinning sector in India, government today restricted the sale of cotton stock of Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to officially registered MSME spinning mills only.

“Cotton Corporation of India will sell its existing stock, purchased under MSP, to spinning mills in the MSME category only. This would be for such MSME spinning textile units registered with the Office of Textile Commissioner,” a press release issued by the Textiles ministry after a high level meeting said.

The Textiles Commissioner informed that the opening balance is expected to be 43 lakh bales on 30th September, 2016. However, she was asked to keep monitoring the situation closely.

Noting that sowing has picked up, the representative from Agriculture informed the meeting that 75.41 lakh hectare of sowing had taken place till mid July, as against 78 lakh hectare of cotton sowing in the corresponding period of previous years.

Meanwhile, a central team has been assigned to monitor whitefly infestation and management in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana where the pest has been detected this season; while advisories have been issued to other states in this regard, the release said. (SH)
