India's production of cotton crop during the Kharif season 2015-16 is likely to be 33.51 million bales of 170 kg each, according to the first Advance Estimates of production of major Kharif crops for 2015-16 released by the department of agriculture, cooperation and farmers welfare, Ministry of Agriculture.

The estimate is lower by 1.12 million bales than its production of 34.62 million bales during 2014-15 (1st Advance Estimates), the Ministry said in a statement. It added that 33.51 million bales is the preliminary estimate and it would undergo revision based on further feedback received from the states.

For 2015-16, the Ministry has set cotton production target of 35.15 million bales.

During the current monsoon season, the cumulative rainfall has been deficient by 15 per cent, i.e. higher than rainfall deficit of 12 per cent in 2014-15. (RKS)
