Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be a "top priority" in the coming months and hoped to take the Bankruptcy Code to Parliament in the winter session, according to media reports.

Jaitley who is on a visit to the US, made the statement during an address to students and faculty at Columbia University. He said there are a large number of other legislative reforms which are required and he does not expect problems in their passage.

The finance Minister blamed the Congress party for stalling Parliament which meant that the GST Bill could not be passed in the monsoon session.

He said it was a political positioning by the Congress rather than a serious ideological opposition because the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government had initiated the idea of the GST. (SH)
