Laos focuses on enhancing resilience, connectivity as ASEAN chair

Laos’ priorities for its chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year focused on two components: ‘enhancing resilience’ and ‘enhancing connectivity’, whose priorities included integrating and connecting economies; forging an inclusive and sustainable future; and transforming for the digital future.

The priorities under ’enhancing resilience’ include development of strategic plans to implement the ASEAN Community Vision 2045; enhancing ASEAN centrality; and promoting environmental cooperation and climate change resilience, according to a press statement issued recently by deputy prime minister of Laos Saleumxay Kommasith, who was the chair of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Luang Prabang.

“We acknowledged the good progress in, and reaffirmed our commitment to, the implementation and realisation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, including the three ASEAN Community Blueprints, the Masterplan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 (MPAC) and the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan IV,” the statement said.

Ninety-two per cent of action lines in the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint 2025 have been completed or are in progress, it added.
