Bangladesh textile and yarn producers are seeking alternatives to importing cotton from Uzbekistan after the imposition of an embargo due to the child labor issue.
Unless Uzbekistan stops exploiting child labor, Bangladesh textile producing plants will not consume raw materials imported from the country.
Retailers also refuse buying local products if they are made from Uzbek cotton whose production engages children denied of elementary education.
However, it remains a fact that Bangladesh imports nearly 60 percent of the required cotton from Uzbekistan as the raw material is of high quality and price competitive.
In fact, this is not the first instance of this kind. Matti Haarajoki, General Manager, Kreenholm, textile company in Estonia, in a press meet announced that the company had ceased importing cotton from Uzbekistan in an attempt to protest against child labor. Related news
