Affected by sluggish demand and rising import costs, Taiwanese cotton imports registered only 17,000 tons in April, marking the lowest level over the same period for many years.
Of which, imports from India only scored 606.9 tons, a reduction of 85 percent year on year, to set the lowest level for the same period in 8 years.
As of April, Taiwan's cotton imports only fetched 196,000 tons in the current season 2010-11.
Taiwan's April textile production fell 6.2 percent year on year, the biggest reduction for the same period in the past eighteen months. The average cost of cotton imports rose to 149 cents / pound, a record high.
Total imports this year are expected to likely hit the lowest level in the past 25 years.
