The Egyptian Organization for Standards and Quality (EOS) has issued new standards restricting the use of certain harmful substances in dyeing textiles.
The EOS has specified the extent of use of certain dyes in textile dyeing process in keeping with the world standards. These new standards are similar to the standards that the US and Europe apply to fabric manufacturing.
The new standards specify a list of various dyes which have been banned for use in fabric manufacturing. Nine carcinogens and 23 other kinds of dyes that are banned internationally are included in this list.
The new standards would become effective from November 15, 2011, on all fabrics. By then, the companies will have to make changes to their domestic production facilities and exports.
Once the new standards become effective, the General Organization for Export and Import Control would start strict checking of the clothes being imported from other countries. The laboratories of the Organization are fully equipped to test all the clothes and fabrics for harmful dyes.
Editor's note-It is always the case of 'the earlier the better' while banning the use of harmful substances in manufacturing facilities. However, strict monitoring and control are also equally essential.
