Textile traders in Andhra Pradesh are observing a bandh on July 11 to protest against the imposition of 4 percent value added tax (VAT) on textiles in the State.

The AP Federation of Textile Association took the decision after the State government issued a government order (GO) imposing VAT on textiles from July 11 onwards.

B Malleshwar Reddy, Vice-President of AP Federation of Textile Association and Convener, VAT convention, said that the views of textile merchants were not taken into consideration, before issuing the GO.

He explained that just prior to the GO, the State government had approached the textile merchants for their opinion, but it did not wait for the Association to reach a consensus on the issue.

He further added that the State Congress Committee President Botsa Satyanarayana had assured the traders that they would be given a month's time to decide on VAT. But, the decision had been implemented even before the Association can convene a meeting for reaching a consensus on the same, he added.

Barely ten days back, the Orissa government had rolled back the VAT it had imposed on textiles, after protests from textile traders in the State.
