Manipur recently hosted a handloom and handicraft buyer-seller meet in Imphal with an aim to boost exports of the State's indigenous handloom and handicraft products.
The meet was held under the auspices of the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicraft Artisans' Cooperative Society in collaboration with Manipur's Department of Commerce and Industries and the Union Ministry of Textiles.
About 15 prominent handloom traders and exporters from all across the country together with the State and Central Government representatives participated in the meet.
All possible support was extended by the authorities to the artisans to enable inter-State sale of handloom and handicraft items.
Commissioner for Handicrafts Development under Government of India, N Choubey said it was a smart plan to draw buyers from outside the State to Manipur as this helps the weavers and artisans to learn regarding the taste of people outside the State and abroad and accordingly develop their products.
The work of the local craftsmen was appreciated by visitors from outside the State who asked the artisans to upgrade the quality of their goods, and told them that a sizeable export market exists for such goods.
A fashion show with young guys and girls showcasing various hand woven apparels on the ramp was the highpoint of the event. The apparels showcased at the show were all designed by upcoming designers of the Blue Ocean Academy.
