Yunlin County government has certified that the second and third ethylene glycol (EG) plants of Nan Ya Plastics meet the safety standards. Following this, the two plants are expected to resume normal operations on July 16.
Operations at the two EG plants were closed after a fire incident occurred in the factory in May this year. The closure led to a crisis of EG shortage, especially in the Asian markets, as Nan Ya is the fourth leading EG manufacturer in the world.
Nan Ya owns four EG plants with an annual capacity of 1.8 million metric tons, all of which are located in the Mailiao offshore industrial zone in Yunlin County. In the wake of the fire accident, the first and fourth EG plants were also closed by the company to review its facilities, but the operations resumed a week earlier.
Once the operations resume in the second and third plants, it will take another four days to reach full capacity and gradually overseas exports will also retain normalcy. Eventually, the crisis of EG shortage created in the Asian markets will also wither away.
