A special handloom expo-2011 has been inaugurated by Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Industries and Commerce, SS Slathia at Pahalgam.

The expo, which is to go on till August 3, will present the tourists and Amarnath pilgrims a chance to buy internationally acclaimed handloom and handicraft items near their base camp.

Artisans from across the State and even some bordering States are displaying and selling their items at around 40 stalls set up at the expo, which has been organized by the Directorate of Handloom department under the aegis of Development Commissioner, Handloom, Union Ministry of Textiles.

Mr. Slathia, while speaking at the launch ceremony of the expo, restated the government's decision to develop an amiable environment for commerce and industry to enable it to groom and thrive in the State.

He informed that all available means are being employed to enhance better marketing facilities to the artisans to help them reap better prices for their goods. The expo is the first step towards achieving this goal, he said.

The Minister said that such expositions extend a platform for the artisans, where they can exhibit their items in a more organized manner, and hence such fairs should be held at district, State as well as at national levels.

He urged the artisans to take advantage of the incentives like soft loans at subsidised rates, insurance, medical cover, etc. that are being offered by the government under different welfare schemes.

Also, he informed that the Handloom Development Corporation has lately launched an online sales portal for handloom items, which is likely to increase sales of handloom and handicraft items manifold in times to come.

Further, he even declared that such exhibitions would be organized at several tourist points in future, especially at the onset of tourist season, with a prime focus on promoting handmade handicrafts.

Director Handicrafts said that the department should organize a handloom exhibition at national level and other district level expos at Leh, Budgam, Jammu and Srinagar, all through the current year.

He stated that the department last year organized a national level expo at Jammu and three other district level expos and earned around Rs. 47.5 million in revenues.
