The Agriculture Ministry of Mexico has announced that it plans to significantly increase the area under cotton to 300,000 hectares by 2016 from the currently estimated 175,000 hectares, i.e. by 71 percent.
The Ministry has cited comments from Jorge Antonio Medina, an industry advisory member, and forecasted that the country's cotton output will rise from the current 620,000 bales to 2.4 million bales during the next five years.
