Union Ministry of Textiles has sanctioned Rs. 245 million to the Mumbai-based Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) for establishing a research and development centre for sports-related textile technologies.
The new R&D centre called the National Centre of Excellence (NCE) in Sportech will function in partnership with Reliance Industries Ltd, the Mumbai-based Kusumgar Associates, and the Vadodara-based Kemrock Industries.
JCT Industries, the Ludhiana-based manufacturer of sportswear for various brands, has also expressed interest in NCE.
ICT, in association with Textile Association, will be organizing seminars across India. It will collect samples of different materials from various places for its R&D activities.
The NCE is likely to be assisted by Texanlab Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., one of the largest independent textile testing institutes in India, in standardization of procedures for various testing processes.
It is for the first time that the Ministry of Textiles has given grants to ICT. Founded in 1933, the textile chemistry section of ICT has now grown into an independent Department of Fibres and Textiles Processing Technology.
Owing to the presence of very eminent faculty at the ICT, the NCE is expected to be in the forefront in the textile related research in the country.
