Bangladesh's Department of Environment (DoE) has fined a textile factory for releasing toxic waste into the Turag River.
A DoE team led by Director (Enforcement) Munir Chowdhury found the textile washing plant in Mirpur releasing its untreated chemical waste into the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) sewerage.
The washing unit was fined Tk 1.048 million for not using the effluent treatment plant (ETP).
It is estimated that the factory released nearly 65,000 cubic litres of liquid wastes every day, which entered the river.
The DoE said the polluting factory would be closed down if its owners fail to pay the fine.
