The 10-day long sixth Kanglei Ningol Khudol Handloom Exhibition cum Mela has begun in Imphal, the capital city of the Northeast Indian State of Manipur.

A whole range of handloom and handicraft items are on display at the expo, organized by Apunba Kanglei Sinnaibi Lup (AKSIL).

Inaugurating the fair, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Industries, O Nabakishore said that the weavers in the State should also focus on weaving silk clothes in order to improve their economic conditions.

He stated that the government will soon introduce Weaver Credit Card, on the lines of Kisan Credit Card for the farmers. It would make it easier for the weavers to obtain loans from banks. Besides, it would also ensure a 10 percent concession to the weavers while making yarn purchases.

Mr. Nabakishore stated that efforts are also on to set up a separate Directorate for promotion of handloom in Manipur and the matter is likely to be discussed during the Cabinet meeting.

A Birendra, Owner of Kangla Food Products, said that if they really wish to see the handloom industry in the State growing, the inhabitants of the State would need to cultivate a habit of making use of domestically-made clothes and taking pride in wearing them.

Other speakers too emphasized on the need for attaching more importance to promotion of domestic weavers and goods prepared by them and giving up the habit of relying on imported items.
