Nigeria to enhance cotton production significantly

The Government of Nigeria will enhance the country's cotton production significantly from the current 20,000 tons to about 140,000 within the next 12 months, Bukar Tijjani, Minister of State for Agriculture, has said.
Inaugurating the North-Western Zonal meeting of the National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN), Mr. Tijjani said the Government would adopt value chain approach for processing, marketing and maintaining the quality standard of cotton to improve the earnings of the farmers.
He informed that the programme to improve cotton production in the country is part of the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan, and added that agriculture is one of the key sectors on which emphasis is laid by the present administration.
He revealed that Nigeria had only 1,500 tons of uncontaminated cotton seed at present and the Government intends to increase the figure to 4,500 tons by next cotton season.
The Minister said cotton is one of the main focuses and the Government has provided support to small-scale farmers by providing them with improved variety of seeds and access to new technologies to boost their production.
Further, he stated that 100 billion Naira worth of loans would be given to farmers to enable them to boost their agricultural produce.
