IFAI's Advanced Textiles Americas symposium series attracted big audiences with hot topics such as recycling and sustainability. For example, Meredith Boyd from UNIFI spoke on the process of making recycled fibers, their performance characteristics and how to use them in your products; and John Viera from Ford Motor Co. spoke about sustainable materials for automotive interiors, how they work for Ford, and gave several examples of successful implementation with a focus on considering renewable and recycled applications.

Keynote speaker highlights
Henry Costo, Battalion Chief for the Philadelphia Fire Department was the AT Americas 2011 keynote speaker. Costo emphasized how crucial the specialty fabrics industry is in collaborating to develop better equipment to make the emergency responder's job safer, so they all come home alive. He stressed the importance of field testing and knowing the right person to call in research and in manufacturing when a new idea emerges from the field.

IFAI's 99th Annual Meeting featured entertaining keynote speaker Charles Cook, Jr., well-known editor of the Cook Political Report, and a political analyst for NBC News and National Journal. His take on the upcoming election year: "The 2012 presidential election is shaping up to be one of the oddest in memory and potentially far more dramatic than one might guess.

Obviously, the general election is still more than 11 months away -- and, in politics, and for that matter anything involving human behavior, predictions are dangerous. But the dynamics that seem to be emerging are fascinating." Cook went on to tantalize the audience with the intricate political variables in the two major political parties which could tip the election either way.

Students create exciting safety textile solutions
2011 student design winnersAlso at the annual meeting, the winning team in the eighth annual Safety Products Student Design Challenge presented their winning project. The annual contest is developed and supported by Safety and Technical Products and the Narrow Fabrics Institute, special interest groups within IFAI, and encourages post-secondary functional design training and the use of technical textiles in protective and safety applications.

Students were challenged to design original projects which protect people or property from hazards. In F irst Place for 2011 was the "Underground Mine Safety Suit." The student designers (pictured at right, from left to right): Jennifer Whelan, Jamie Bystrom, Alicia Mitchell, Sarah Furnaé and Toni Sabelman. Instructor: Dr. Gindy Neidermyer.
