Spanish textile production declines in October

The industrial production in Spanish textile sector declined by 7.5 percent year-on-year in October, after posting a positive performance for two months. The decline was more compared to the fall in Spain's Industrial Production Index (IPI) of 4.2 percent year-on-year, according to the figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

During the first ten months of 2011, Spanish textile industry witnessed an average decline of 0.7 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2010. While production increased in months of January, February, March, May, August and September, it showed a decline in April, June, July and October.

In the apparel segment, too, there was an 18.9 percent year-on-year decline in October, the biggest dip this year. From January to October this year, the production in garment industry dropped by an average of 11.9 percent.

In contrast, manufacturing in the fabrics segment rose by 7.4 percent y-o-y in October.

The other segments which saw a decline in industrial activity during the month were textile finishing, which saw a dip of 17.8 percent y-o-y, knitted garments fell by 15.2 percent, textile fibres by 14.9 percent, fur articles 6.2 percent and manufacture of other textiles 6.1 percent.
