Ayurvedic coir in limelight at Coir Kerala 2012
Feb '12
Ayurvedic coir, a product displayed at the Handloom Weavers Development Society's (HWDS) booth at Coir Kerala 2012 in Alappuzha, hogged the limelight, as all consumers including foreigners visiting the fair, showed considerable interest.

Items like ayurvedic carpets, mats and mattress and ayurvedic coir massage bags drew attention of several people visiting the expo. This has thus helped the society to bag orders worth Rs. 10 million.

HWDS ships its products to countries like Japan, USA, Italy, Germany, China, Dubai and Australia, where, the society believes, people better understand the value of their products.

Visitors, particularly from foreign countries were quite surprised with the sheer variety of products showcased by HWDS at the fair, and after gaining knowledge about the products and their origin, many of them decided to give it a try. Some of them even decided to visit the main centre of HWDS in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to HWDS, ayurvedic coir has ample scope in health tourism, for example, people in remote areas can prepare an ayurvedic panchakarma houseboat using the coir. These items can also find utility in construction and interior designing of houseboats.

The society evolved ayurvedic coir around two decades ago. The coir is prepared after soaking coconut fibres in extracts of some 100 medicinal plants.
