The France-Latin America Engineering Company (CIFAL) intends to enhance its productive association with Turkmenistan, said Gilles Remy, CEO of the French firm during a meeting with Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov.

Cotton production has grown in Turkmenistan over the last two decades and the country has now established itself as one of the most competitive cotton producer across the globe.

Having identified agriculture, particularly the cotton industry as a key to a mutually beneficial partnership, CIFAL is looking forward to further increase its cooperation with Turkmenistan, particularly in the field of cotton, Mr. Remy said.

Turkmenistan expects to harvest 1.109 million tons of raw cotton from 550,000 hectares of area on which cotton has been sown this year. In 2011, the country produced around 1.1 million tons of raw cotton.

Just like previous years, this year too, special attention is being paid to the soil and climatic characteristics of each region from the very start of the plantation season that began around a month back.

Presently, around 5,000 farmers with around 7,000 tractors, 2,200 sowing machines and other equipments are engaged in cotton cultivation in Turkmenistan. The equipments are mainly sourced from the US and Belarus.

Traditionally, Turkmenistan exports majority of its cotton produce to the UK, Russia, China, South Korea, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia, Ukraine, Singapore and the Baltic countries.

Raw cotton cultivation is mainly undertaken in five provinces - Dashoguz, Akhal, Lebap, Balkan and Mary – of Turkmenistan. The crop is usually harvested during August to October.

The implementation of cotton production is undertaken in the country through the State Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange of Turkmenistan.
