China's yarn imports rise; exports fall in Jan-May

The wide gap in prices of cotton in China’s domestic market and other countries has led to a rise in Chinese yarn imports, while showing a decline in their exports, during January to May this year.

China imported 830,000 tons of yarn during the five-month period, registering an increase of 25.9 percent year-on-year, according to statistics of Chinese customs. These imports were worth US$ 2.98 billion, up 12.5 percent year-on-year.

On the other hand, China exported 1.361 million tons of yarn during the first five months of 2012, showing a decline of 7.3 percent year-on-year.

In terms of value, these exports fetched US$ 4.92 billion, a decrease of 13.1 percent year-on-year. Average export price was US$ 3.61 per kg, down 6.24 percent year-on-year.

The fall in yarn exports is considered to be the main reason for the decline in prices of Chinese textile products.
