Australia is the world’s leading wool exporter, accounting for two-thirds of the world’s wool exports, accounting for around 24 per cent of global wool production, followed by China (15 per cent), New Zealand (12 per cent), former USSR republics (9 per cent), and Argentina (4 per cent).
The Australian sheep flock is forecast to increase by 4 per cent to 81 million head in 2012–13, reflecting continuing flock rebuilding. Sheep shorn numbers are expected to increase by 3.5 per cent to 89.4 million head.
The Australian wool industry began in 1807 when the first bale of Australian wool was sent to England with the intent of commercial sale. “Today, we sit unmatched for our wool prowess and product, and Australian merino wool is recognised as the world’s whitest, softest and most lavish natural fibre. “
