The consumption of synthetic fibres by the textile industry in China is increasing, while the proportion of the use of cotton is reducing.

Owing to the high price of domestic cotton, several textile enterprises in China have reduced the proportion of cotton in their manufacturing and have raised the consumption of chemical fibres.

According to relevant data, the man-made fibre consumption by Chinese textile industry was 11.7 million tons in 2012, while the actual use of raw cotton was less than 9 million tons. Thus, synthetic fibre consumption exceeded by around 2.7 million tons over cotton consumption during the year.

In fact, many textile enterprises shifted their focus from the use of cotton to synthetic fibres to develop their products in 2012, mainly due to the wide gap in prices of domestic and imported cotton.

Even in 2013, the Chinese textile industry is expected to continue to increase the quantity of chemical fibres in textile production and simultaneously decrease the amount of cotton utilization, according to experts.
