Pakistan’s Federal Committee on Cotton (FCC) has set a target of enhancing the cotton cultivation acreage in the country by 5 percent from 2012-13 acreage to 7.648 million acres or 3.092 million hectares during 2013-14 season, to reap 14.1 million bales of cotton, a 5.75 percent higher than current year’s anticipated output, Cotton Development Commissioner Dr. Khalid Abdullah has said.

The 2013-14 cotton production target has been set by the FCC after analysing the demand-supply data furnished by the concerned departments, to meet the domestic consumption as well as export demand, Dr. Abdullah told APP.

The Committee discussed crop cultivation acreage, output and crop calendar and decided to undertake the production review for Punjab and Sindh provinces in October rather than in November, so as to avert any speculation based on production estimates released by local and global industry stakeholders, he said.

At the meeting, the analysis presented by the Meteorological Department forecasted that Punjab and Sindh provinces would experience slightly above normal rainfall and temperature during the forthcoming crop season, while melting of snow due to high temperature in northern regions during mid-summer would also facilitate enough availability of irrigation water in canals.

Representatives of Indus River System Authority (IRSA) ensured FCC that reservoirs would have sufficient water for irrigation during the upcoming cotton cultivation and growing season.

Dr. Abdullah said concerned departments have given assurance of enough availability of fertilizers and cotton related pesticides.

However, the Seed Certification and Registration Department informed the FCC that considering situation at hand, certified cotton seed availability is likely to fall short of actual demand by around 10 percent.
