A buyer-seller meet was jointly organized by the Office of Development Commissioner (Handloom), Union Ministry of Textile and the Department of Handloom and Textile, Uttar Pradesh, in the North Indian city of Varanasi to help weavers better market their products and bag orders.

The meet, held last week, saw participation of several buyers from Delhi, Kolkata and other states like Chhattisgarh, and is estimated to have generated orders worth about Rs. 5 million to handloom weavers.

The meet was an effort by the government to alleviate the effect of recent hike in duty on raw silk from 5 percent to 15 percent.

Weavers from different Integrated Handloom Development Scheme (IHDS) clusters operating in various parts of the country like Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Meerut, Chandauli, Azamgarh and Chhattisgarh’s Chapa showcased their products at the meet.
