After successful technical studies and research, Paraguay’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock may allow the commercial use of multidisciplinary transgenic cotton Bt-RR by next month, according to abc.com.py report.

Cristina Soerensen, Coordinator of the Comisión Nacional de Bioseguridad (CONBIO or National Biosafety Committee), said the commercial release of Bt-RR could be expected in near future and it may be made available to cotton growers by the beginning of the next crop season.

Cultivation of Bt cotton was first authorized in Paraguay on July 4, 2012.

Meanwhile, Paraguay’s Servicio Nacional de Calidad y Sanidad Vegetal y de Semillas (SENAVE or National Quality and Plant Health and Seed), has said the availability of cotton seed for planting in the country for the new season could be about 20,000 bags to cover an area of 20,000 hectares,  provided the quality of the current cotton seed production in the country is adequate and if there are surplus stock from last season.
