NUTGTWN demands early payment to Kaduna Textiles' workers

The National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has demanded early payment of more than N687 million to the workers of closed Kaduna Textiles Limited (KTL).

In a letter to Governors of 19 Northern states, NUTGTWN general secretary Issa Aremu said in September 2005, the court had issued judgement for settlement of the workers pay amounting to N687,073,346 by the owners of KTL, the 19 Northern states.

However, the payment to the erstwhile workers had not been made so far in spite of repeated appeals by the unions and workers, according to a Vanguard report.

KTL workers are suffering untold hardship due to non-payment of their benefits since the unilateral closure of the factory in 2002, Mr. Aremu, who is also the vice president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said in the letter.

Mr. Aremu also expressed concern over the inability of the Governors of the 19 Northern provinces to re-open some textile companies jointly owned by them.

The letter also called on the management of other closed textile mills in Northern Nigeria, particularly Arewa Textiles Plc and Gaskiya Textiles, Kano, for an early payment of dues to their workers.
