Vietnam, Greece discuss cotton cooperation

Vietnam has expressed interest in establishing cooperation with Greece for technology transfer and scientific training in the cultivation of cotton, for which Vietnam’s ambassador to Greece, Mr. Vu Binh, recently visited the Greek municipality of Mouzaki, in the city of Karditsa in Thessaly.

According to a statement issued by Municipality of Mouzaki, during his two-day visit, the Vietnamese ambassador visited the University of Thessaly—Department of Agriculture and met with the president of the department, with whom he discussed the possibility of cooperation on technology transfer and scientific training on the cultivation of cotton as well as student exchange programs.

Mr. Vu Binh expressed interest in leading a formal mission of Greek entrepreneurs, officials and professors to Vietnam, with the aim of ratifying trade agreements between the countries in the cotton sector as well as an educational-scientific cooperation between the two countries for cotton.

Mayor of Mouzaki, Mr. George Kotsi, said the two-day visit of the Vietnamese ambassador would result into a possible cooperation at both educational as well as trade level between the two countries.

The exchange and technology transfer between Greece and Vietnam for cotton cultivation would open up new horizons for trade, as Vietnam annually imports 500,000 tons of cotton, whereas Greek overall production of cotton has never exceeded 250,000 tons per annum, he added.

During the two-day visit, the Vietnamese ambassador visited cotton ginneries in Thessaly to gain a comprehensive picture of mechanization of farming, harvesting and ginning of cotton, and also met with the president of Panhellenic Union of Cotton Ginners and Exporters, in order to discuss enabling direct purchase from Greek cotton ginners without the existence of intermediaries.
