Tongsuh Petrochemical, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan’s Asahi Kasei Corporation, is likely to shut its No.3 Acrylonitrile (ACN) line for maintenance turnaround this month.

“The No. 3 ACN line at Ulsan is likely to be shut for maintenance on December 26, 2013,” a company official told fibre2fashion.

“The plant would remain shut for about a month,” the official informed.

When quizzed about the line’s current performance, the official said, “It is currently operating at 80 percent capacity due to high prices of raw material and also to reduce the inventory in view of weak market conditions.”

Tongsuh operates three ACN lines in Ulsan. While line no. 2 has production capacity of 70,000 tons/year, line no.s 3 and 4 have capacity of 245,000 tons/year each.

Established in 1969, Tongsuh Petrochemical Corp., Ltd. became South Korea’s first company to produce ACN. The company has contributed greatly to the development of Korea’s petrochemical industry.

Acrylonitrile is the key ingredient in acrylic fibers used to make clothing.
