The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC),  announced that Dr. Mehboob-ur-Rahman, of the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Pakistan, has been selected as winner of the ICAC Cotton Researcher of the Year for 2014.

The ICAC honors a leading cotton researcher each year by awarding a certificate of recognition, a shield and an honorarium of US$1,000. Applications for the award were received from February 1 to March 31, 2014, and an independent panel of experts reviewed the applications during the month of April.

Dr. Mehboob-ur-Rahman specializes in molecular breeding and has been involved in basic as well as applied research on cotton. Dr. Rahman and his team have been active partners in many international megaprojects, including the physical mapping of D-genome and the D-genome sequencing project.

In addition to local and international registration of germplasm, Dr. Rahman released a number of cotton varieties that directly benefit cotton growers in Pakistan. As a result of his contributions to the cotton sector, Dr. Rahman was bestowed by the Government of Pakistan a ‘Gold Medal in 2009.'

The Third World Academy of Sciences honored him by an Award in Applied Science-Technology in Agriculture (under 40 in Agriculture) in 2011. The Government of Pakistan awarded him the Presidential Award for Pride of Performance in 2012.

Dr. Rahman has published extensively. He has written 14 (eight international and six national) book chapters, mostly as a principal author. He has published 57 peer-reviewed articles, of which two are in Nature. Dr. Rahman has been an invited speaker and attended many international conferences, including in Austria, Brazil, China, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, UAE and USA.
