Thomas Yayi Boni, President of the West African nation of Benin, has urged his country’s farmers to produce 400,000 tons of cotton during the 2014-15 season.

Speaking at the launch of the 2014-15 cotton campaign in Banikoara, a cotton growing region in the northwestern part of the country, the President urged cotton growers to mobilize all their means and resources to increase cotton production in the country and reach an output of 400,000 tons in 2015 overcoming any obstacles that arise during the course.

In a televised broadcast of the launching of the cotton campaign, the President said it would not be enough for his countrymen to grow cotton, and they should also think of transforming the cotton to further value-added products.

He said that an emerging economy like that of Benin requires that steps are taken to transform the raw cotton, Afriquejet News reported quoting PANA News Agency.

He assured farmers that the Government would take steps to inject about 59 billion CFA francs in the country’s cotton sector.

In 2013-14 season, Benin produced 307,000 tons of cotton, compared to harvest of 240,000 tons in the previous season, thus taking a step forward towards achieving the goal of increasing the country’s cotton production to 500,000 tons.

Cotton accounts for about 40 percent of Benin’s GDP and roughly 80 percent of its official export receipts.
