US textile & apparel imports up 2.58% in Jan-Nov '14

The United States imported textiles and apparel worth US$ 99.48 billion in the first eleven months of 2014, registering an increase of 2.58 per cent over imports of $96.982 billion made in the corresponding period of last year, according to the Major Shippers Report, released by the US Department of Commerce.
 
The US imported $38.858 billion worth of textiles and garments from China, which accounted for 39.04 per cent share of all textile and garment imports made by the US in January-November 2014, the data showed.
 
Vietnam, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh were among the top five suppliers of textiles and garments to the US, with goods valued at $9.224 billion, $6.203 billion, $4.732 billion and $4.649 billion, respectively, during the eleven-month period.
 
Segment-wise, the US apparel imports during January-November 2014 were worth $75.857 billion, whereas non-apparel imports contributed $23.623 billion.
 
In the apparel category, Vietnam stood out among the top ten suppliers to the US as its exports increased by 14.58 per cent year-on-year to $8.590 billion, during the period under review. While no other country among the top ten suppliers was able to cross the 6 per cent growth mark, countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh and Cambodia saw their exports declining over the corresponding period of 2013.
 
While the US import of man-made fibre (MMF) apparel increased by 8.93 per cent year-on-year to $32.285 billion, and that of wool apparel by 9.44 per cent year-on-year to $3.784 billion, the import of cotton apparel declined by 2.87 per cent to $38.628 billion.
 
In the non-apparel category, among the top-ten suppliers, the import from Turkey and Italy shot up by 11.73 per cent year-on-year and 8.92 per cent respectively to $682.076 million and $549.232 million. On the other hand, imports from Canada dropped by 5.26 per cent to $732.748 million.
 
Of the total US textile and apparel imports of $99.48 billion during the eleven-month period, manmade fibre products accounted for $46.482 billion, while cotton products were worth $46.461 billion, followed by $4.857 billion of wool products and $1.678 billion of products from silk and vegetable fibres.
 
In 2013, the US textile and apparel imports increased by 3.76 per cent year-on-year to $104.725 billion, with apparels alone accounting for $79.797 billion. (RKS)
