The National Petrochemical Company (NPC) recently observed that petrochemical production by the end of March 2008 is likely to reach 27 million tons from the previous 19 million tons produced in the last year.

While the country earned about US $6.1 billion in the last fiscal year, it is most likely to touch $8.3 billion this year.

At a ground breaking ceremony of Third Urea and Ammonia Complex in Shiraz, the NPC chief talked about its ongoing projects. This included 24 petrochemical projects for which an investment of nearly $12.5 billion has already been made.

Most importantly, an ethylene line measuring 2,400 kilometers in length would be constructed running from the southern to the western part of the country. This apart, 10 pertrochemical complexes including Mamassani, Kazerun, Gachsaran, Borujerd, Khorramabad, Sanandaj, and Andimeshk would be built along the line.

Further, the annual urea fertilizer of Shiraz Petrochemical Complex is also expected to increase to 1.5 million tons from current 500 thousand tons.

Experts believe that keeping in mind the present growth in the country's production, Iran is already on its way to become the world's cradle for petrochemical production in the next few years.
