Cyprus and Malta became members of the Euro Zone within the European Union this year. In time for this date a Cyprus Textile Route was established, which has been developed by ETN member Julia Astreou- Christoforou with support from the department for culture of the Greek-Cypriot government and the tourism organization in her country.
This is the 29th route within the framework of the European Textile Routes, and it may be travelled virtually through the ETN website and provides access to the textile cultural heritage of the island.
The Cyprus Route comprises eleven stations, including nine addresses for important textile collections and for information on the textile history of the individual regions of the Greek part of Cyprus, as well as two production, exhibition and sale venues for high-quality craft products, including the combined workshop, showroom and gallery of Julia Astreou-Christoforou, who acts as the central contact person for the entire route. The internet presentation on the Cyprus Route is in four languages: English, French German and Cypriot/Greek.
The European Textile Routes, which now comprise 517 stations in 20 countries, are based on a uniform principle and may be accessed on the internet in two ways: 1, according to geographical and 2, according to thematic aspects. The former routes resemble travel suggestions through 29 countries, regions and urban areas, the latter are akin to specialist excursions through themes such as a) Monuments, b) Recurrent Events, c) Textile Cultural Heritage, d) Textile Production, and e) Education & Research.
