Petroleum Minister inaugurates Gas Hydrates

Shri Murli Deora, Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas has said that with sustained efforts, the programme for gas hydrate coring/drilling in Indian Offshore has been successfully executed.

“I am informed that we have discovered one of the best gas hydrate reservoirs in K G Area. This is a very exciting development”, he added. He was speaking while inaugurating the three-day International Conference on “Gas Hydrates” at Noida, near Delhi.

Shri Murli Deora also pointed out that production from gas hydrates is a long term goal for many developed countries but it is expected that the production of gas from gas hydrates may be realized sooner due to accelerated efforts by a few countries like India, USA and Japan.

Shri Deora re-iterated Government's commitment to the development of gas hydrates, an important natural resource. With the dedicated efforts of national oil companies and the government, India has become the third country in the world to undertake such an ambitious programme on gas hydrates in offshore areas.

Acknowledging the technological challenges to be overcome before gas hydrates are brought into commercial use, he expressed hope that solutions will be available in the near future with the kind of efforts being made in this area by the scientific community.

“The present programme of gas hydrate coring/drilling and scientific investigations in Indian offshore is an important milestone in this direction. National oil companies such as ONGC, GAIL and OIL are taking a lead role for the exploratory efforts on gas hydrates”, the Minister said.
