Cotton - the pride of Uzbek growers

Uzbekistan brought about a successful structural change in its cotton processing industry and this has ultimately earned the country reputation for being one of the most competitive in the world cotton market.

The main policy of Uzbekistan in cotton production emphasizes on increasing the capacity and competitive environment for regional as well as world trade. Besides, it has also concentrated on intensive introduction of new high-yielding cotton varieties having world standard properties.

Although, Uzbek cotton is recognized world-wide for its high quality, experts are still focusing on improving cotton yield by means of latest technology, seed farming development and introduction of new protection means and growth promoters.

In the year 2008, cotton production is likely to reach more than 1 to 1.05 million ton from the present area coverage under cotton cultivation of about 1.4 square hector.

A cut down of cotton consumption in European countries during 2007 led to an increase of exports by 70 percent in Asian countries.

Presently, the textile industry of Uzbekistan has the potential of processing and producing some 3,80,000 tons of cotton fibre, over 3,00,000 tons of yarn, 336.8 million meters of cotton fabric, 170 million units of knitwear and eight million hosiery products.

Experts also believe that by the year 2012, nearly 50 percent of total world cotton fiber will be processed in Uzbekistan. Being the sixth in cotton fiber production and the second in its export, it is one of the leading countries in the world cotton market.
