Recurrent power cuts in the textile industries of Tamil Nadu is causing obstacles in the production process which may force manufacturing units to shut down and as a consequence thousands of workers may become jobless.

Power shortage and trippings are expected to increase by another 25 percent during the summers and this will definitely reduce production by 20 to 25 percent.

In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, Dr K V Srinivasan, Chairman of Southern India Mills' Associatin (SIMA), stated, “Although the Government will provide about 1000 mega watt electricity and will try for central allocation and purchase of power from private merchants and other states, it may not be able to source more than 200 to 300 mega watts.”

When asked about some other measures that the Government promises to take, Dr Srinivasan said that the Government has proposed to purchase power at the rate of Rs7 per unit from captive power plants. This apart, the center also has plans to give additional incentive for night hour consumptions and Sunday workings.

According to Dr Srinivasan, the Government has assured that the problem is only for a short duration (summer) and will be operational only during the peak hours.
