Cotton imports surge in Jan

The General Department of Customs recently reported that Vietnam imported 28,500 tons of cotton worth US $40.3 million, for local textile and apparel production in the first month 2008.

The statistical data show a growth of 23 and 43.2 percent, in volume and value compared to similar period last year.

During the period, India emerged as the biggest supplier of cotton, selling nearly 10,000 tons of cotton worth $14.3 million, representing a boost of 142 and 150 percent respectively against December last year and a rise of around 10 and 30 percent respectively in comparison with same period 2007.

Standing at the second place, US enterprises shipped 6,700 tons to Vietnam for $9.1 million, up by 75 and 59.8 percent over December 2007, year–on–year growth of 61.5 and 86.1 percent.

In the first month of 2008, Vietnam sourced 3,100 tons, of cotton worth $4.2 million from Taiwan.
