Consumer price index of Qatar reached 166.87 percent in the first quarter of this year against 159.34 percent recorded in the fourth quarter of last year reflecting an increase of 4.73 percent.

While energy and fuel prices marked a surge of 4.76 percent, textiles on the whole recorded a marginal rise of 2.9 percent and transport and communications group rose by 4.76 percent largely due to increase in prices of air-tickets.

Experts discerned that this increase was mainly due to accelerating global food prices. This apart a significant increase of 5.16 percent in gold prices among others has also pushed up the price index.
