Mulesing likely to continue beyond 2010

The Australian wool industry has received a letter of support from over 40 international wool processors, permitting mulesing of sheep beyond 2010, if necessary.

Processors from China, the UK, Bulgaria, Turkey, Switzerland, India, Germany, Italy and France have urged retailers to give up boycotting of Australian wool. However, they all have placed the condition of using pain relief during mulesing process.

Some of the largest processors of Australian wool have opined that unless there are sheep bred that do not require mulesing, wool growers must take steps that are in the best interests of the animals and this also includes mulesing to reduce fly strike.

Moreover, the Wool Industry Taskforce Operations Group, which played a significant role in defending mulesing and animal welfare practices, has also been winded up by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) which until now was funding its activities.
