General Assembly of ASEAN Federation of Textile Industries (AFTEX) is currently preparing a draft detailing the requirements to make ASEAN the global center of clothes industry.

Several experts also believe that ASEAN is absolutely capable of ending the dominance of China and India in the international clothing industry.

AFTEX Chairman, Lee Quoc An said that the draft was just the first step in the efforts to give tough competition to China and India. Further, ASEAN would take measures to upgrade production, by adjusting the structural and administrative chains.

However, analysts stress that Governments needed to aggressively help cut down pressures on the textile and clothes industry.

Currently, illegal import and export has become a major issue. For instance, while illegal fabric import in Vietnam accounted for 5 percent of total product import last year, that of clothes reached as high as 20 percent. Moreover, 70.6 percent of fabric in Indonesia market comes from illegal import.
