Mr Hoang Trung Hai, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, while attending a conference, discussed about the improvement strategy for the textile and garment industry of the country, by 2015, and stated that the sector plays an important role in framing industrial development strategy of the country.

Available statistics reveal that the textile sector contributes 10 percent of nation's export value, with average growth rate of 20 percent annually, and has generated more than 2 million jobs for the country people.

Vietnam is largely dependent on imports for its raw materials. To reverse this situation, experts opine that the textile and garment industry must handle difficulties in infrastructure; improve productivity and competitiveness. For this, comprehensive development scheme with selected projects are required to control inflation. Even development of country's own support industrial zones is an important issue.

According to Mr Bui Xuan Khu, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), says that the most important programs were to produce one billion meters of cloth for export and to develop 40,000 hectares of cotton by 2015.

Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vinatex and related enterprises requested Government to provide suitable mechanism of infrastructure development; trade promotion; to build good will and support for training and scientific study. They also considered cotton development program as an important issue for the nation.
